Claire McCartney is a vocalist and performer, having trained under well-known figures within the arts and music sphere in Northern Ireland. Upon completing her BA (Hons) in Drama Studies at Queen’s University Belfast, she received the accreditation of “Degree Plus,” for her commitment to teaching music and drama, performance, facilitation and volunteer work within the arts. Claire continued her studies to gain a Master of Arts post-graduate degree (with commendation) from Queens University Belfast specialising in areas such as Musical Theatre and Ethnomusicology. She also achieved an ALCM diploma from the London College of Music for Music Theatre Performance.
Claire’s experience includes session vocals (in-studio and live show), songwriting, co-writing as well as performance in theatre, concerts, stage productions and radio plays. Recent theatrical credits include a Northern Irish tour of ‘The Jazzabelles’ by Nicholas Boyle (Skinnybone Theatre), for a ‘sell-out’ run, with Claire starring as a lead role of ‘Ella’.
Other theatrical credits include 4 consecutive runs of Wireless Mystery Theatre’s Irish Christmas touring production, a 1940s Christmas Radio Show of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. She also often performs as part of Wireless Mystery Theatre’s 1940s vocal harmony trio, The Mystery Sisters.
Claire’s own band, indie/pop act ‘VOKXEN’ – was selected as one of NI’s most promising acts, and gained a place on the artist development program ‘Scratch My Progress’ at the Oh Yeah Music Centre with links to The Arts Council NI, PRS for Music and Help Musicians UK. Front-woman, Claire, has performed at a number of Irish festivals with her band, including a live worldwide streamed performance to thousands at ‘Party in the Square 2015 Pride’ at Custom House Square. After a sell-out launch show in Belfast, the band have had airplay on radio stations such as Cool FM & BBC Introducing and are currently recording and working towards their next release.
As a vocalist & keyboardist, Claire holds a residency in Belfast Establishment, Aether & Echo and is a member of ‘The Unholy Gospel Band’. A line-up featuring some of the NI music scene’s finest and fronted by top Irish rock band, ‘The Answer’s,’ very own, Cormac Neeson. Previous projects have seen Claire perform at Tennents Untapped at top Northern Irish Music Festival, Tennents Vital, BBC at Edinburgh Fringe, Stendhal Festival and live sessions with BBC Radio Ulster.
Claire has experience in performing at corporate and promotional events including the NI Tourism Awards at the Grand Opera House, Belfast; Titanic Belfast Banquets; Arts and Business Awards, and the “Thrive” Creative Industries event at The Lyric Theatre, Belfast; Council Dinners; Wedding ceremonies; and Formal Events.
