Project Description

Nathan Martin

Nathan Martin is an actor, writer, director, and the founder of Dark Forest Theatre, a theatre company recognised for its dark storytelling and emotionally charged original productions. Since establishing the company in 2023, Nathan has emerged as a distinctive voice within contemporary Irish theatre, creating work that blends folklore, mythology, psychological drama, and social commentary with a bold theatrical imagination.

His body of work includes the acclaimed original productions A Filthy Dirty RumourMONSTERMarjorie’s Dead, Alice In Wonderland and I, She, Medusa. Across these productions, Nathan has developed a signature artistic style that combines gothic imagery, emotionally complex characters, and stories that explore grief, identity, love, violence, and the hidden truths that shape human behaviour. His work frequently examines the darker aspects of the human psyche while remaining deeply rooted in compassion, humanity, and contemporary social issues.

As both a writer and performer, Nathan is drawn to characters who exist on the margins—individuals wrestling with secrets, trauma, desire, and transformation. His performances are characterised by emotional intensity, vulnerability, and a commitment to psychological truth, while his directing style is noted for its atmospheric visual storytelling and immersive world-building. Whether reimagining mythology, exploring family tragedy, or confronting social injustice, his productions seek to challenge audiences while creating powerful emotional connections. His work has been staged in some of Ireland’s leading theatrical venues, including The Grand Opera House, The Lyric Theatre, The MAC and Smock Alley Theatre.

At the heart of Nathan’s work is a belief that theatre should be both transformative and provocative. Through a growing catalogue of original plays and an unmistakable artistic vision, he continues to establish himself as one of the most ambitious emerging theatre-makers working in Northern Ireland today, creating stories that are haunting, thought-provoking, and macabre. In recognition of his artistic contribution, Nathan was selected for Theatre and Dance NI’s prestigious INVEST Fellowship Programme, supporting the development of Northern Ireland’s most promising creative practitioners. He was also shortlisted for Ulster Tatler’s Arts Personality of the Year 2025, acknowledging both his artistic achievements and his impact on the wider cultural landscape.
